Healthier eating in five easy steps? You are probably saying “Yeah, right!” I thought that too, but it works. Children start to eat what they will eat for the rest of their lives as toddlers. So this is the time to get their healthy eating habits started from the beginning.

If your child is older than a toddler it is likely how they eat is already a habit. It is up to you to help your child learn healthier eating habits. It can be hard sometimes.

To keep your picky eater healthy, bring in the five food groups a little at a time. The reason it is possible, is that there are so many options available that there is bound to be some items your child will eat. Start with these steps and see if it becomes easier to help keep your child eating healthier.

Step #1: Eliminate treats that are not healthy. Try strawberries instead of sugary sweets. Kids are more likely to try new things when they are hungry. Sugar is an addiction, and it is one that will need to be removed slowly. Avoid sugary snacks as much as possible.

Try to have several healthy options available at each meal. Do not let the child bring their ideas of what to eat to the meal. If they do not like the mixed vegetables, then they may like the salad. Try not to offer the foods you are trying to replace at this time because that is what the child is used to and that is what they will choose.


Step #2: Find out what your child likes. Use a taste test. This is a fun way to get your kid to try a few new foods. Do this one bite at a time. Then when you know what your child will eat, it is time to make your grocery list around that.
