Your Dieting Will Never Get You Anywhere

Researchers have recently shown that a low-carbohydrate diet is more effective than other types of diet in helping overweight people shed pounds safely. In 2008, a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, titled, “Weight Loss With a Low-Carbohydrate, Mediterranean, or Low-Fat Diet.” The study seems pretty conclusive, with people losing more weight on the low-carb diet than on the others, without any sign of the health problems that some people claim are associated with low-carbohydrate diets.

So that’s cool. Just go on a low-carb diet for a while and you’ll soon have the body you want, right? Not exactly. Here’s why dieting alone isn’t enough to get you the fitness you want.

One big problem with basing your fitness plans on dieting is that concentrating on dieting ignores your muscles. That is, diets may take fat off your frame, but they don’t help prevent this muscle loss, much less help you build additional muscle. It is an established scientific fact that starting around our 30th birthday, we naturally begin losing muscle mass. If we don’t do anything to counteract this, a person will typically lose 5 to 10 pounds of muscle mass for every ten years they age. That’s a lot of muscle, and something that diet plans do nothing to prevent.

Secondly, the results of the diets are weak. The participants were overweight men and women, or people with Type 2 diabetes. They were placed on one of three types of diet. They were also given instructions and materials specific to the diet they were to follow. Over the course of two years, each group of people had eighteen 90-minute meetings with a dietician to help them stay on track. People who had trouble sticking to the plan received pep talks over the phone as well.

The results of all this? Among the people who stayed in the program for two years, the average weight loss for the low-fat diet was 3.3 kg (7.27 lb), for the Mediterranean diet was 4.6 kg (10.14 lb), and for the low-carb diet was 5.5 kg (12.13 lb). There were also some positive changes in markers of health such as cholesterol levels.

These results aren’t very impressive. Under more or less ideal conditions, and with some professional coaching, the best type of diet only produced a 12 pound loss in two years. That’s about a half a pound a month. Of course for an overweight person to lose 12 pounds safely is a good thing, but come on. Will losing a dozen in 2 years, while simultaneously losing some of your youthful muscle, make you happy?

A good diet is important to your health and fitness. And this study shows that a low-carbohydrate diet is probably the best choice whether you want to drop some pounds or avoid getting fat to begin with. Unfortunately, it’s also clear that diet alone isn’t enough to get you the kind of fitness you desire. You’re going to need to break down and go for a total fitness plan, one that combines exercise and good nutrition.

Why Cheating On Your Diet Makes Sense

If you need to lose weight, you’re likely to be working out more. And it is a near certainty that you’re following some kind of weight-loss diet. While this diet will surely be good for you, I bet the thought of going without your favorite foods anymore stinks. Fortunately, all is not lost. It turns out that occasionally cheating on your diet can be a good thing. It could actually be key to succeeding on your diet. That probably sounds strange, but it’s true. The rest of this article explains why cheating is good when you’re trying to get fit at last.

To lose weight (or more precisely to reduce your body fat percentage), you need to eat healthier foods and consume fewer calories. That’s hard because you like your favorite foods a lot, and they’re probably not the healthiest ones. Giving them up isn’t easy on your mind. But consuming fewer calories isn’t easy physiologically. Let’s talk about why.

A key reason that any kind of diet doesn’t work well is the way your body adapts. When you consistently cut back on the number of calories you consume, your body may take this as a signal that you are in the midst of a famine. In short, it acts as if you are in the midst of a famine.

When your body is in starvation mode, it functions in ways that won’t help you meet your goals. It starts storing every calorie it can as fat, since it thinks there isn’t enough food to go around. It dials down your metabolic rate, leaving you with less energy. It puts less effort into maintaining and repairing your joints and muscles, since the top priority is to survive until there’s more food. If the “famine” last too long, it starts consuming your muscles as fuel while preserving the fat for an even more dire emergency.

As you can imagine, the results are ugly. You end up listless, with little energy to exercise. If you do get up the energy to exercise, your workout suffers. You tend to get hurt quickly, and healing takes way too long. Any food you do eat gets stored as belly fat. Your muscles start to fade away. Starvation mode clearly isn’t conducive to working out and building a muscular body. This is where cheating comes in.

Missing a single meal, or even going without food for a few days won’t cause your body to go into starvation mode. It takes a sustained calorie shortfall for that to happen. If you don’t have that sustained shortfall, your body will stay in its normal mode and your diet will remain effective. You’ll get all the benefits of your new eating plan without the nasty side effects of going into starvation mode.

So, to ensure that your serious fat-loss diet remains effective, you need to cheat once in a while. Every so often, you need to eat significantly more than the plan calls for, to keep your body from going into starvation mode. That makes life easier, and it gets even better. If you eat your favorite foods on thedays when you break the diet, it becomes that much easier to stay on your diet the other days. After all, there’s a big difference between giving up pizza (or whatever) altogether, and still eating them on your high-calorie days.

The easiest way to do this is to eat anything you want once a week. But this approach isn’t necessarily the most efficient way to go. If you want to get the best fat loss results possible, while still avoiding starvation mode, you should get expert advice on all aspects of the way you eat, including whether cheating is appropriate for your situation.
